NovelSat announces that Eurovision Media Services – the business arm of the European Broadcasting Union – recently updated their satellite distribution network with new technologies, including the NovelSat NS4 waveform and new NovelSat ProtCASTER, the first satellite broadcasting solution with AES 256-bit encryption.

Ra’anana, Israel, April 4, 2018 – NovelSat, a world leader in satellite transmission technology, announced today that its NovelSat ProtCASTER DRM solution was implemented as a part of a major satellite network upgrade by Eurovision Media Services (EMS). As a part of the upgrade, EMS also replaced their current satellite waveform, NovelSat NS3, with the more robust NovelSat NS4, further boosting spectral efficiency by up to 15%.

Co-developed with EMS, NovelSat ProtCASTER DRM is the only satellite broadcast content protection solution based on virtually unbreakable AES 256-bit encryption. In addition, ProtCASTER offers a set of easy-to-use graphical tools to dynamically handle satellite broadcast content Digital Rights Management (DRM), entitlement, scheduling and booking. ProtCASTER is embedded in the Eurovision Hypermux Satellite Content Distribution Platform and has already been proven in the distribution of major sporting events.

NovelSat has also reached an agreement with EMS to commercialize the ProtCASTER technology so that it can be licensed to other media distribution players and benefit the broadcasting community at large. NovelSat will also offer ProtCASTER as a new service.

In addition to ProtCASTER, EMS also included the NovelSat NS4 software package in their upgrades. NovelSat NS4 has enabled EMS to achieve about 15% additional efficiency compared with the NovelSat NS3 waveform that was previously used. NovelSat NS4 is available in all NovelSat satellite modems, modulators and demodulators, which also support and are backward compatible with industry standards, including DVB-S, DVB-S2 and DVB-S2X.

NovelSat NS4, with a ROF as low as 2% and a wide variety of modulation codes, can boost capacity by up to 45% without increasing bandwidth demand compared with DVB-S2. The NovelSat NS4 waveform, like all NovelSat features, is a software-upgradable option that can be installed remotely. It also includes a set of advanced mitigation algorithms and detection mechanisms to handle most types of Radio Frequency Interference (RFI).

“As one of the world’s biggest distributors of live HD TV content, EMS – like any company – has to protect itself against the threat of pirating, especially as these methods become more sophisticated over time,” said Oscar Teran, Senior Manager of Technology & Solutions, EMS. “We have relied on NovelSat for satellite efficiency technology for years. Now, we are even more confident that our content is well protected with the AES 256-bit encryption in the ProtCASTER solution co-developed by NovelSat and ourselves. We are confident this will become a leading solution in the broadcast market,” he continued.

“EMS has always been at the forefront of satellite network technology. As a major player in the media market, they want to be sure that they are using the strongest tools to secure their content,” said Efi Levinzon, NovelSat CPO. “Novelsat co-developed the ProtCASTER with EMS to ensure that the solution meets the needs of media organizations and operators around the world. We can scale our solution for broadcasters of all sizes,” he continued.

Large European Broadcaster Upgrades with NovelSat Satellite Technologies

European broadcast content distributor implements NovelSat NS4 waveform and new NovelSat ProtCASTER, the first solution for satellite broadcasting offering DRM with AES 256-bit encryption plus entitlement and scheduling.

Ra’anana, Israel, September 11, 2017 – NovelSat, a world leader in satellite transmission technology, today announced that its distribution and content protection technologies play a significant role in the full upgrade recently performed by a Europe-based broadcaster in their global satellite content distribution network. The NovelSat customer has already successfully used NovelSat NS4 and NovelSat ProtCASTER for highly efficient and secure satellite transmission of major broadcasting events. They plan to secure and protect all of their future broadcasting events using ProtCASTER.

NovelSat NS4 satellite transmission technology was selected for the network upgrade as it outperformed all other transmission standards and enabled an additional gain of 15% compared with the previously deployed NovelSat NS3-based systems. Further, the broadcaster chose ProtCASTER, the new DRM platform from NovelSat. ProtCASTER is the only satellite broadcast DRM platform that is based on AES 256-bit encryption, delivering the highest level of satellite content security with easy-to-use tools for scheduling and content entitlement. These and other features are requirements for managing a huge global network of thousands of satellite receivers.

NovelSat Introduces ProtCASTER – World’s Most Secure Solution for Satellite Broadcast

NovelSat releases ProtCASTER, the first satellite broadcasting content protection, entitlement and scheduling solution with DRM based on virtually unbreakable AES 256-bit encryption.

Ra’anana, Israel, September 7, 2017 – NovelSat, a world leader in satellite transmission technology, today announced availability of NovelSat ProtCASTER; a new broadcast content protection, entitlement and scheduling solution for satellite-based content distribution.

ProtCASTER is the only satellite broadcast DRM (Digital Rights Management) platform based on virtually unbreakable AES 256-bit encryption, delivering the highest level of satellite content security available today. Satellite broadcasters spend fortunes of money to license live and recorded content that they deliver to their customers and affiliates. Unfortunately, major satellite broadcasters who use industry-standard BISS and BISS-E-based DRM have suffered hacks, with decryption keys regularly posted to social networks, compromising the security of high-value broadcasts. This highlights the market need for more aggressive solutions.

The ProtCASTER platform is a two-layer solution that provides both 256-bit encryption to secure valuable content, and access protection based on each receiver’s viewing entitlement rights, defined per video channel (PID). With easy-to-use browser-based tools for event scheduling and content entitlement, ProtCASTER operators in any satellite broadcast network, even the largest global networks with thousands of satellite receivers, can easily schedule and confidently secure their content.

ProtCASTER works with all NovelSat satellite modems, modulators and demodulators. It uses a secured OTA channel for exchanging AES keys and is integrated with NovelNet, a full-featured NMS (Network Management System) for end-to-end network orchestration that includes DRM.

A NovelSat customer has already successfully implemented ProtCASTER in one of the world’s leading broadcast content distribution networks. They plan to use ProtCASTER to secure and protect all of their future broadcasting events.

“With ProtCASTER, NovelSat adds the highest level of content security to its industry leading satellite bandwidth efficiency,” said Ronen Sadan, NovelSat AVP Marketing. “These, and other new innovations make the NovelSat offering an ideal solution for broadcasters who rely on satellite transmission for content delivery.”

NovelSat ProtCASTER has been shortlisted for the CSI Award for Best Content Protection Technology 2017. The CSI Awards 2017 ceremony will be held on Friday, September 15th at the IBC 2017 show in Amsterdam.
